Overview

This lidded bowl, known as an Opon Igba, is a powerful example of the high-quality carving skills of the Yoruba from Nigeria. Within the Ifa tradition, the object functioned as a sacred repository for the ikin (palm nuts) consulted by the diviner (Babalawo) to gain insight into destiny.

The carving on the lid testifies to deep symbolism. The anthropomorphic figures, executed with characteristic almond-shaped eyes and stylized features, serve as a tribute to the ancestors and the Orishas who watch over the ritual. The central cavity in the plateau is specifically designed to secure the sacred instruments under the heavy, protective lid.

The condition of the piece is excellent for an object of this age. The deep, dark patina shows a layering that only occurs through decades of intensive handling and ritual offerings. This weathered appearance, combined with the prestigious provenance from the Peter Beaujean collection, makes this a masterpiece for the serious collector of West African tribal art.
