Male Ibedji twin statue - Yoruba - Nigeria- 2e half 20th century
OverviewAmong the Yoruba, twins occur relatively frequently. It is believed that twins bring luck to both the household and the tribe. The death of a twin is therefore considered a disaster in multiple respects. As a result, a figure is often carved for a deceased twin, an Ibeji statue like this one. Its purpose is to house the spirit of the deceased child and to serve as a companion for the surviving twin. This statue is cherished and cared for; it is washed, symbolically fed, and sometimes decorated with cowrie shells and strands of colored beads. This is a decorative piece with a powerful presence, carved with care and craftsmanship in a warm brown color. In good condition. See the photos.
