Overview

Discover the raw spiritual power of this authentic Fon fetish figure (Bocio) from Benin. This object is not merely a sculpture, but a powerful ritual instrument from the Vodun tradition, intended to provide protection and channel spiritual forces. What makes this specific specimen truly exceptional and highly collectible is the baby on its back—a rare iconography in Fon art that typically signifies female heroism, fertility, or the protection of the bloodline.

Ritual Activation and Patina The figure bears witness to an intensive ceremonial life. It is deeply rubbed with tukula (red camwood powder), which in African cosmology represents life force and ritual 'heat'. On the belly, a pouch contains the bilongo: magical substances that 'activate' and animate the figure. The patina is encrusted in places due to sacrificial offerings. Traces of libations (ritual gifts) and remnants of ritual feathers are clearly visible in the wood's texture.

The figure is presented on a professional black base, which beautifully highlights its vertical, monumental appearance.
