Some more detailed information:

The Mukanda initiation rite is a traditional rite of passage among the Chokwe (and other Bantu peoples of Angola, Congo and Zambia), in which boys are initiated into men. This usually occurs during adolescence and includes circumcision, education about social roles, and spiritual formation. Two important masks used at Mukanda: Pwo Mask: Represents a female ancestor or the ideal woman. It is worn by men and symbolizes fertility, beauty and respect for feminine forces. The mask reminds the boys of the importance of women in the community. Chikunza Mask: Symbolizes the spiritual world and is often associated with protection and order. It is used to instill discipline and respect for traditions. These masks play an essential role in conveying cultural values during the ritual.
