Lip disk from the border of Sudan and Kenya. Diameter of 12 cm! and what is rare... decorations on both sides!
Used large clay lip disk.
Lip discs are worn by women in Africa and by men in South Africa. They occur only in the upper or lower lip or in both lips. The lips are cut free from the overlying or underlying skin. This plate is placed in a hole that is made by putting a piercing through it. They start with a small one and it gets bigger and bigger.
