MOBA TCHITCHERI wooden statue, Togo, mid 20th century
OverviewBeautiful example of an old MOBA THCITCHERI statue
The specific style of these types of images has become very popular. This is a fairly rare example in this form because it is not completely abstract. The face has a mouth, nose and eyes with minimal intervention. You see that very rarely! It undoubtedly gives the image extra appearance and character. The head is round and small with a thick, sturdy neck underneath, transitioning into a slender, long body with thin, slightly curved arms running tightly along the body. The long slender legs are also slightly bent and show erosion due to insect damage. The statue is made of a hard type of wood, has a convincing patina of use and age and is free of bugs.

This image may have been used ritually on a family altar or in front of a clan altar. But it may also have had the function of protection and promotion of prosperity and health. It does not depict a specific person or ancestor and is a direct link to God.
