Overview

Ekoi (Ejagham) Crest Mask – Trade Art

This skillfully crafted crest mask is a striking example of the artistic tradition of the Ekoi (Ejagham) from the Cross River region (Nigeria/Cameroon). The object consists of a wooden core covered in tightly stretched antelope skin, a technique that provides characteristic realism and emphasizes the sharp physiognomy of the face.

While the refined finish and aesthetics suggest an object created (in part) for the early collector's market (trade art), the mask exhibits several features that make a history of tribal use defensible. The interior of the wooden core shows natural erosion, and the woven rattan base possesses a patina consistent with prolonged handling and actual wear. The presence of white pigment (kaolin) in the eyes and traces of old insect damage contribute to the authentic appearance of this piece.

In this current analysis, despite the defensible tribal features, the decision has been made to categorize this item as a high-quality 'trade art' object. Consequently, a highly competitive price point has been established, offering the collector exceptional value for a well-documented specimen.
