Very large BAMBARA female statue, Mali, 1960-70

Stylistically very striking appearance, this large, heavy female statue of the Bambara from Mali. Slightly leaning back with the belly pointing forward and long slender arms with the hands angled forward next to the body. Short strong legs. The fact that the breasts point forward and the vagina in this shape indicates that it is an initiation statue in which a young woman joins the world of adults. Beautiful varied patina.
