Ancient Kandimbong ancestor statue, SEPIK, PNG, ca 1940

Stylistically strong object, this old ancestor statue. Broad, slightly forward-hanging shoulders that merge into slightly bent arms. The patina is beautiful, but cannot show it well in a photo. Age and conditions have caused hairline cracks in the surface of the statue. Signs of use are clear and appropriate and some oxidation of the wood is visible on the edge of the top.
