Overview

Very Large Akusan Shell Belt from the Bontoc

The Bontoc are an ethnic group from the Cordillera region on Luzon, Philippines. This traditional belt is made from large polished shells (often snail or oyster shells), sometimes combined with seeds, animal teeth, or metal beads, strung on a fiber cord or woven textile band. This particular piece features a central cluster of smaller shells.

Use and Symbolism
The Akusan was primarily worn by Bontoc warriors or hunters and served as a status symbol. Wearing such a belt signified bravery, maturity, or participation in a major hunt or ritual. In some cases, it was worn during ceremonies, dances, or preparations for war.

It also had a ritual and protective function: the natural materials and organic shapes were associated with spiritual power, ancestral protection, and connection to nature. Due to its weight and robustness, it also enhanced the physical presence of the wearer.

This Akusan is a remarkable example of Cordillera craftsmanship and embodies the practical, spiritual, and aesthetic values of Bontoc culture.
