Fantastic EKOÏ couple statues, Nigeria, 2nd half 20th century
GREAT! Fantastic couple, man and woman of the EKOÏ tribe from the very south east of Nigeria. The base is made of wood, and it is beautifully decorated with antelope leather. The man has dreadlocks made of hair, while the woman's hair is made of rope. Jungle beans are adjusted to the edge of the forehead. Phenomenal expression of both the man and woman. Look carefully at the details on the photos, such as the somewhat protruding surfaces on the face of the man. The man has scarifications all over his body. The mouths are somewhat opened, and they contain metal teeth. The arms are separately attached, so that they can move separately, like a marionette. In the past, the skin of slaves was used for these kinds of statues. With slight traces of use and aging, the statues are in good condition.
