Rare protection fetish, EKOI, Nigeria, 2nd half 20th century
Rare zoomorphic protection fetish of the EKOI tribe from the far southeast of Nigeria. Human figure with animal head. The base of wood is beautifully decorated with antelope leather. On the head, two animal horns. Statues like these serve a protecting role against witchcraft and other threats and negative influences. The beak is opened with teeth in it, the eyes are made of glass. With slight traces of use and aging, this statue is in good condition.
