Expressive OKUYI facial mask, PUNU tribe, Gabon, late 20th century
Refined, expressive OKUYI facial mask of the PUNU tribe from Gabon. Large, diamond-shaped scarification on the forehead, marked out metal wire surrounding it, braided strings of glass beads in diverse colours and above that, a string of Kaori shells. On top of the high hairdo, a bird, symbolizing the shipping of messages. Often this concerns the announcement of pregnancy. On the backside, a braided rotan, decorated with painted cloth. Between the cap and backside of the mask is another string of natural fibres. A remarkably complete mask.
