Huge SUAGA helmet mask, MAMBILA, Cameroon, approx. 1975
Mambila masks like this SUAGA were used within a central fertility ritual or at funerals of prominent people in the tribe. It was carried on the head, with a long, net-shaped robe underneath, covered in chicken feathers that cover the entire body.
Huge mask, fabulously sculpted, zoomorphic and powerful. Unbelievably expressive mask... remarkably shaped eyes, opened beak with a rounded tongue, and two mighty horns on top. At the edges of ears, eyes and also on the horns, his lines of red-brown pigment are visible. With some traces of use and aging, this mask, wanted by collectors, is in good condition.
