Big GAU, travelling altar from Tibetan Buddhism, 2nd half 20th century
Big GAU, Tibetan travelling altar. Brilliant, deeply carved mantra's and behind the glass, a Buddha statue in the middle. Behind that, there are printed cloths of prayer, blessed by a priest. The GAU, made of an alloy with lower silver content, is fully decorated with cloth with gold string. Furthermore, there is a band attached to the Gau. Objects like these functioned as some sort of altarpiece during travels and it also was supposed to serve as protection.
