Old fetish protection statue, D.R. Congo, approx. 1960
Old fetish protection statue from Congo. Possibly from the Pende tribe, though I cannot say this with certainty. A wooden figure with white kaolin colouring remainders all over the body. The body is largely covered by natural fibres and a strip of red cloth. Statues like these were used as some sort of house altar and it was supposed to protect family members from witchcraft and evil in general. The statue is placed on a stand that is included. With traces of use and aging, this statue is in good condition.
