Used betel nut container, IFUGAO tribe, Philippines
A beauty! Betel nut container, made of the bone of a water buffalo with a wooden stop on top. The betel is a leaf of the piper betel plant, and is known for her medical and stimulating effects. Betel-quid is mostly used in Asia. Apart from the leaf, there are several other things in the package, amongst which the areca nut (also known as betel nut). This nut has a stimulating effect on the nervous system. The whole is glued together with a thick white fluid, known as calcium hydroxide or slaked lime. People that often use the stuff have red teeth, and they get red teeth while chewing as well. The rice god BULUL plays a prominent role in Ifugao culture, and it is craftily carved here. Remainders of the betel nut substance are visible and you can even smell it. Worn, good condition.
