Harmonious mask, SONGYE tribe, D.R. Congo, 4th quarter 20th century
Nicely sculpted mask of the Congolese Songye tribe. It is the more peaceful, feminine variant. The masculine variant has an aggressive comb on the head. On top of the head, there is a bird, symbolising the bringing of messages, in this case presumably the announcement of pregnancy. Craftily styled mask, both contrasting and harmonious. The face knows many finely sculpted, parallel lines. The mask is in good condition, and it must be dated in the final quarter of the 20th century.
