Overview

This exceptional 18 cm power figure is a rare, active witness to the deep spiritual survival traditions of the Baule people of Côte d'Ivoire. While most known Baule sculptures reflect the civilized aesthetics of spirit spouses, this rare Bo Usu (bush spirit) enters the raw and untamed world of the wilderness (blolo). The figure functioned as a powerful hunting and harvest fetish, designed to channel and tames the indomitable forces of nature to serve the community.

The expressive and spiritual charge of this object lies in the unique synergy of its ritual attributes. The beak-like mouth, a classic feature of amuin power objects, instills fear () and symbolizes the clairvoyance and targeted hunting power of a bird of prey. However, the beard of natural hair bestows upon this untamed nature spirit the moral authority, dignity, and wisdom of a clan founder or respected ancestor (Mamla). This "taming" of the wild bush spirit is ritually sealed by the active charge on its back: an original and beautifully preserved bundle of botanical seed pods (Xylopia aethiopica), synonymous with vitality, growth, and the magical protection of crops.

The thick, encrusted sacrificial patina (patine croûteuse) testifies to decades of intensive ritual worship and libations with sacrificial blood, eggs, and millet beer. Mounted on a characteristic mid-20th-century black hardwood block base and boasting an excellent Belgian provenance (ex-collection of Mr. Peeters), this is a rarely survived masterpiece that reflects the true, unfiltered soul of West African tribal rituals. An extraordinary collector's piece that will instantly capture attention at any high-end tribal art auction.
