Antique Wooden Tumbiya Amulet Containers (Lot of 9) – Swat Valley
OverviewDiscover this extremely rare and museum-quality lot of nine antique wooden amulet containers, locally known as Tumbiya (or Ta'wiz holders). These fascinating objects originate from the rugged Swat Valley in Pakistan and are deeply rooted in the spiritual culture of the local Kohistani and Pashtun hill tribes.
Powerful Protection for Humans and Livestock
In local tradition, these hand-carved amulets were used as powerful protectors against the 'Evil Eye' (nazar), illness, and accidents. While they served as human talismans, they were also frequently fastened around the necks of valuable livestock as an alternative to branding. What makes this lot of absolute top quality is the exceptional rarity of its contents: several pieces still contain the original wooden closing plugs and the handwritten Islamic prayer papers (ta'wiz) hidden beneath them. Because these amulets were typically discarded or destroyed upon the animal's death, surviving examples are incredibly scarce.
Authentic Patina
Each piece bears witness to decades of intensive tribal use. Through years of natural friction against animal fur or skin, oils, and weather influences, the wood has developed a magnificent, deep, and beautifully weathered dark patina. A rare opportunity for serious collectors or institutions specializing in tribal art, Islamica, and ethnographica.
