Overview

This rare Kumu (Bakumu) Nsembu mask, originating from the Maniema region in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is an impressive example of archaic Congolese art. This ritual masterwork, dated between 1920 and 1950, most likely served within the Nkunda society for communication with ancestral spirits.

The mask stands out due to its powerful three-dimensional design with a depth of 9.5 cm. The aggressive expression, enhanced by the wide-open eye sockets and the unique, inserted wooden teeth, underscores the spiritual vigilance and the "dangerous" nature of forest spirits. The dark, layered patina is the result of decades of ritual handling, while the visible remnants of white kaolin pigment refer to spiritual purity and the world of the ancestors. Adze marks on the interior testify to an authentic, traditional creation. Given the combination of volume, rare teeth, and museum quality, this piece represents an excellent acquisition for the serious collector. The object is provided on a professional, custom-made display stand.
