Refined Kapala, skull cup – Tibetan Buddhism – Nepal
OverviewThis beautifully detailed Kapala (skull cup) from Nepal is an essential ritual object within Tibetan Buddhism (Vajrayana) and Shaivite tantric traditions. Originally fashioned from a human cranium, this 21st-century specimen is expertly cast in high-quality synthetic resin. This material is perfectly suited for highly refined, deep relief carving.
The exterior displays a rich iconographic decor, centered around a central vishvavajra (double thunderbolt) and surrounded by floral motifs and Buddhist symbols. The interior is lined with chased white metal (Tibetan silver with a low silver content), mimicking the traditional metal lining in which offerings such as ritual wine (symbolizing blood) were poured. The raised edge is masterfully finished with a continuous frieze of stylized skulls (munda), which in the tantric context symbolize emptiness (shunyata) and the impermanence of the ego. An aesthetically highly attractive and meaningful ritual object.
