Overview

This exceptional bronze amulet, originating from the border region between Ivory Coast and Liberia, is a superb example of the metalwork of the Dan people. At the center of the shield-shaped object is a face in high relief, modeled after the iconic deangle or tankagle masks, known for their serene, spiritual expression.

Use and Significance Such amulets were worn by high-ranking individuals, warriors, or spiritual guides. They served as protective talismans and signs of status within the hierarchical structure of the Poro societies. The concentric circles surrounding the face symbolize spiritual resonance and protection, while the open-worked zigzag border acts as a connection between the physical and spiritual worlds.

Patina and Age The object exhibits a rich, layered patina of brown and deep green tones, indicating a date in the early 20th century (ca. 1900-1930). The natural wear on the suspension loop confirms that this piece was worn for decades and was an integral part of ceremonial life.
