Description and Provenance

This exceptional Songye Kifwebe mask is an iconic example of early Central African sculpture from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The object is in excellent, original condition and originates from the respected Dubois collection in Liège. Its early dating (ca. 1920–1930) and documented Belgian provenance mark this mask as a rare collector's item of significant historical importance.

Ritual Use: The Power of the Bwadi bwa Kifwebe

Within Songye society, this mask was not merely a decorative object, but an essential instrument of the Bwadi bwa Kifwebe association—an institution responsible for maintaining social order and justice.

  • Feminine Energy (Kikashi): This specific specimen is of the feminine type, identified by the absence of a frontal crest. While male masks radiate aggression, the Kikashi symbolizes serenity, reproduction, and the benevolent forces of the ancestors.

  • Symbolism of the Striations: The deeply incised, parallel grooves (bifwebe) refer to the subterranean labyrinth of the world of the dead. The use of white kaolin pigment represents purity, moonlight, and the positive influence of the spirit realm.

  • Ceremony: The mask was worn during vital rites of passage and the funerals of dignitaries to restore spiritual harmony within the community.

Artistic Analysis and Condition

With a height of 37 cm, the mask possesses a monumental presence. Its sculptural strength lies in its bold, cubist formal language. The deep grooves follow the contours of the face in a rhythmic pattern, accentuated by a sophisticated contrast between kaolin and dark natural pigments. The reverse side exhibits a deep, authentic patina of age and use, with clear traces of indigenous tool marks and long-term ritual wear.

Valuation and Market Assessment

Given its early dating, aesthetic purity, and strong collection history, the replacement value of this mask is appraised between €8,500 and €11,000. This museum-grade object represents a solid investment for the connoisseur of Arts Premiers. Last picture is a Kifwebe from the Claes Gallery.
