Salampasu Mutombo Iron money - Congo - Early 20th century
OverviewA large-format iron currency from the Salampasu.
This type is known as "mutombo" and is a rare and impressive object, used by this warrior people from the border region of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola. These iron blades served as a form of money, often for large transactions such as paying a dowry, settling debts, or paying fines. The characteristic shape with the cutouts is an artistic expression of the Salampasu and distinguishes it from the currency of, for example, the Mambila.
