Large Fon Fetish Figure – 70 cm – Tradition & Ritual from Benin

This impressive Fon fetish figure, measuring no less than 70 cm in height, is an authentic ritual object from Benin, created around the second half of the 20th century. The figure reflects the profound spiritual traditions of the Fon culture, in which fetishes (also known as bochio) were used as powerful mediators between the visible and invisible worlds.

Symbolism and Use

Fetish figures like this one served as spiritual protectors and were employed in rituals to obtain strength, healing, protection, and prosperity. The figure was activated by priests (bokonon) through libations of blood and other offerings, thereby charging it with spiritual energy.

This example contains several powerful elements:

  • Six iron bells with clappers – symbol of communication with the spirit world.

  • Cowrie shells – sign of wealth, fertility, and protection.

  • A glass bottle – often used to preserve medicinal or magical substances.

  • Traces of libations with blood and organic material – evidence of intensive ritual use.

  • Textiles and fibers in which the bells are embedded, enhancing the magical force.

Unique Collectors’ Object

With its impressive size and rich details, this Fon figure is a rare and authentic artwork. It radiates spiritual power and stands as a striking collectors’ item for connoisseurs of African tribal art and ritual objects. The figure is neatly mounted on a base.
