Female wooden statue, Akan, Ghana, ca 1960
OverviewOlder female wooden statue of the Akan people from Ghana
Originally this lady undoubtedly sat on a stool; hence the attitude. Very appealing image with a soul! Both the probable stool and the motif of rings in the neck and the introverted serene expression refer directly to the Akan. Label said Ewe, but in my opinion it is incorrect. She may have once held a mirror in her hand. The statue therefore stands for prosperity, status or represents someone with a special spiritual status. The patina is dark, in several layers and slightly crusty.
This image looks best with a spotlight on it. The statue is mounted on a base.
