Ibedji twin statue with beaded coat, YORUBA, Nigeria, ca 1970
OverviewIbedji Twin Figure with Beaded Jacket
This remarkable Ibedji twin figure from the Yoruba culture of Nigeria is a fine collector’s piece. The Yoruba honor twins (Ibedji) as a blessing, but also as powerful spiritual beings. When one of the twins passes away, an Ibedji figure is carved to house and honor the soul of the child. Family members care for the figure daily with oil, food, and prayers to keep the spiritual bond intact.
This particular example has not been tribally used, but is still highly appealing: beautifully dressed in a handmade jacket, richly decorated with thousands of tiny glass beads in vibrant colors. The front displays a stylized face in red, yellow, and brown on a deep blue background, symbolizing protection and connection. The back features a geometric pattern in red, brown, blue, and yellow, radiating strength and harmony.
Ibedji figures are regarded as protectors of the family and bringers of prosperity. Wearing beads and garments enhances their spiritual power and reflects the loving care of the family.
This piece is a fine example of Yoruba art and spirituality, while also serving as an eye-catching item in any decorative ethnic collection—a symbolic artwork with a story.
The figure is missing one breast, which is not particularly distracting. It is mounted on a stand.
