Mysterious fetish statue, unique! PARE, Tanzania, 19th century
OverviewMysterious and Extremely Rare Unique Feish Figurine!
This small Pare fetish figurine from Tanzania (approx. 11 cm high) is a powerful example of minimalist tribal art. Despite its modest size and simple form, the object carries an intense expressive charge. The figurine is made of wood, although the matte, rough surface finish initially gives the impression of terracotta. This earthy texture enhances the archaic character of the object.
The figure is stylized: the body is cylindrical, with separated legs and a flattened head at the back, without a neck. The face is rudimentary, with only minimal indentations for the eyes and mouth. The nose extends onto the forehead, and the open round mouth along with the pierced eyes create a penetrating expression—almost incantatory. The navel is accentuated with a deeply carved center, in which remnants of a charge are still visible under a magnifying glass. The navel holds spiritual meaning and represents the center of life and the connection to ancestors. On the back, a cowrie shell has been inserted—traditionally a powerful symbol of fertility, protection, and feminine energy.
The figurine may have been used as a personal protective fetish, intended to shield the bearer from harm or illness. The austere, abstract form and absence of decorative elements suggest that its spiritual function was more important than aesthetic detail. This minimalist design emphasizes the inner strength and presence of the object: a small figurine as mysterious as it is powerful!
