Very Intense/Expressive Mask!

Mushroom masks utilize the natural shape of tree-parasitic fungi with minimal modification. Only the mouth and eye openings, as well as the nose, are carved by the sculptor. They are rarely worn by dancers and are more commonly hung in homes, where they develop a beautiful black patina from soot. This one has aged so much that the smell of soot is no longer present. The natural form has been beautifully respected, and with minimal adjustments, this has become a fierce and very powerful mask! It is made from the Lingzhi mushroom (Ganoderma Lucidum). As mentioned, masks like these are hung in homes and are believed to protect the inhabitants from evil spirits — including the spirits responsible for the sudden rising mist in the Himalayan mountains, the region where these people live. They are only found in eastern Nepal and are relatively rare. This particular mask is in good condition and has an amazing presence!
