Imposing Large and Heavy Bulul Maternity Figure from the Ifugao

Beautiful large and heavy figure with a strong, somewhat mystical appearance. Although not tribally used, it is certainly worthwhile!
Maternity figures are less common than the well-known Bulul figures of the rice god. The face is minimally carved yet radiates maximum expression. The patina is varied, adding extra character to the piece. The price is fair and sharp for a market-made figure like this, weighing over 6 kg! It is made of nara wood. Use and Symbolism of Bulul Figures

Bulul figures are traditional rice gods from the Ifugao culture in the Philippines. They are often carved from wood and represent ancestral spirits who protect the harvest. These figures symbolize fertility, prosperity, and abundance. Traditionally, they are placed in rice storage areas to bless the harvest and ward off evil spirits. During rituals, the figures are consecrated with the blood of sacrifices, which activates their spiritual power. The posture of the Bulul—often seated with bent knees and closed eyes—radiates calm, wisdom, and spiritual strength.

A special type is the maternity figure, depicting a woman with a child on her lap or at her breast. This figure emphasizes the power of female fertility, care, and the continuity of life. It represents not only physical reproduction but also spiritual and cultural transmission. Such figures are often passed down within families and are rarer than the standard Bulul. They carry strong symbolism of protection for mothers and children.
