Overview

Unique and authentic Mayan head made of terra cotta

This beautiful Mayan head is a handmade terracotta work of art that has its origins in the rich civilization of the Classic Mayan period (250–900 AD). The head shows refined details such as earrings, carved eyes and a decorated headdress, indicating a figure of status – possibly a noble or spiritual leader.

The Maya were an advanced Mesoamerican civilization that stretched across what is now southeastern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, and parts of Honduras and El Salvador. They are famous for their architecture, astronomy, hieroglyphic writing and complex calendar system. Artifacts such as this head have often been found in tombs, temples and ceremonial contexts and reveal much about the social structure and religious beliefs of this ancient culture.

This head is probably a grave find and may have served as an offering or as a portrait of the deceased. The earthy red color and stylistic shapes are typical of ceramics from areas such as Copán or the Petén Basin.

A valuable and culturally rich object that is perfect for collectors, lovers of pre-Columbian art or as an exclusive decorative piece. Every detail reflects the mystique and sophistication of one of the greatest civilizations of antiquity.
