Head mask of the IBO, Nigeria, 1960-70
OverviewExpressive head mask of the Ibo people
Masks like these were worn on top of the head, attached to a kind of ring that was covered with fabric so that it did not hurt to wear. A mask like this was used during festive occasions and during street theater. It is also called folk art. Nice big head! with a lot of depth and contrast due to the white kaolin remains, but equally harmonious. An earring is still present on the right. The round eyes are set deep in the face and the mouth emerges, is small, closed but shows teeth. The patina is varied.
A strong and beautiful decorative object!
