The Huamp food bowl is a traditional utilitarian object of the Boiken people, an ethnic group in Papua New Guinea residing primarily in the Sepik region. Carved from wood, these bowls are often richly adorned with symbolic motifs, such as zoomorphic heads or spiritual figures. The Huamp bowl is utilized during rituals, ceremonial feasts, and as a vessel for offerings.
The object embodies social status and a profound connection to ancestral spirits and natural forces. Within Boiken culture, art plays a central role; masks, statuettes, and functional objects serve as essential media for communication with the spiritual realm. Their society is organized into clans, where ancestor worship, animism, and oral traditions are paramount. The Huamp is therefore far more than a mere vessel; it is a vital spiritual and social cornerstone of their cultural heritage.
